A company has been prosecuted after a worker sustained injury at work to his hand in an accident at work.

The workplace accident happened on 18th December 2007 when a group of Knauf UK GMBH employees were asked to clean the rollers on a plasterboard production machine. Safety guards had been removed and the machine was turned on and one of the workers hands became trapped causing him to suffer the injury.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) carried out an investigation and found that an appropriate health and safety risk assessment had not been carried out before the task was carried out.

Knauf UK GMBH of Kent were charged at Sittingbourne Magistrates Court and pleaded guilty to breaching the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations and the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations, they were fined £4,000 and ordered to pay £3,204 in costs.

The injuries at work the victim sustained have had a major long term impact on his life, with basic tasks becoming difficult to carry out.
