Companies prosecuted after quarry worker is injured
Quarry worker fell into a conveyor after tripping whilst inspecting it - 28th June 2009
Two companies have been prosecuted this month after
a man tripped at work and his arm became trapped in
a quarry conveyor.
The man was involved in this
accident at work on the
12th May 2008 at Calstron Quarry, Thropton, as he
was inspecting the head drum area of the main
incline conveyor belt, he tripped over a piece of
metal on the top landing and fell into the belt
area.
After his
trip and fall at work whilst inspecting
the conveyor, his arm became caught in the belts
mechanism and became trapped at the shoulder.
The Health and
Safety Executive found the conveyor to have
inadequate guards, which may have prevented the
worker falling into the belt area of the machine and
suffering his
injuries at work.
At Alnwick Magistrates Court, North East Concrete
Limited pleaded guilty to breaching regulation 6 (1)
of The Quarries Regulations 1999 which says that
they should ensure the necessary measures are taken
to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, that
the quarry plant was constructed, operated and
maintained in such a way that persons at work can
perform the work assigned to them without
endangering their own health and safety, and also
regulation 12 of The Quarries Regulations 1999 which
says they should ensure a suitable inspection regime
is followed.
They were fined £3,333 and ordered to pat £2,779 in
costs.
North East Plant Sales Limited pleaded guilty at the
same court to breaching section 2 (1) of the Health
& Safety at Work etc act 1974 which says that they
should ensure so far as was reasonably practicable
the health, safety and welfare at work of their
employees.
They were fined £5,000 and also ordered to pay
£2,779 in costs.
