Man suffers horrific burns in accident at work - 16th November 2010
A man has been left
permanently scarred
following an
accident on a
chemical plant in
Cumbria.
David Lightfoot
suffered serious
burns to his face
after being overcome
by flames at
Indorama Polymers
plant in Workington.
He was doing some
welding work on a
silo containing
Terephthalmic acid,
which is highly
flammable. He said
that the flames
engulfed him,
forcing him to jump
off the 10ft
platform he was
working on.
Mr Lightfoot spent
two and a half weeks
in hospital
recovering from the
accident and said:
“I’m having ongoing
treatment including
seeing a plastic
surgeon and I’m very
aware of my
appearance and feel
self-conscious in
social situations.
This accident has
changed my life. I
feel really clumsy
and I also suffer
from balance
problems as well as
feeling very
depressed at times.”
Indorama Polymers
admitted liability
for the accident and
was fined £20,000 at
West Allerdale
Magistrates Court.
