Lifting accidents at work causing injuries to
employees
Many thousands of people are injured at work each
year in the UK through lifting or carrying heavy
objects. This section of our site covers this type
of accident and will help to clarify what happens
from a legal perspective in such situations.
CASE STUDY
Client injured lifting 25kg weights
The client in this case was a warehouseman working
for a medium sized company. He injured his back
whilst lifting a weight of over 25 kilograms
without aids, equipment or forklift etc.
He
had not been trained in manual handling on how to
lift weights safely and as a result he was not
adopting the correct posture. The weight of the
objects being carried was also far too heavy for
one man to lift repetitively without equipment or
assistance.
He
suffered a severe back injury which caused him to
be absent from work for 6 months. He required
lengthy physiotherapy to correct the spine and was
unable to resume his sports and hobbies.
The employer was guilty of failing to adequately
train their employees or provide equipment. They
had not complied with the Manual Handling
Regulations 1992 and admitted primary liability
early early on in the claim
