A worker was seriously injured in an
accident at
work when he was crushed beneath an 800kg machine
working at a train refurbishing company.
He suffered his
workplace accident in September 2006
at a train maintenance depot in Leckwith, Cardiff,
when he was helping to move part of a wheel lathe.
The machine was to have its legs placed on skates,
but while they were positioning the skates the
machine toppled over causing the worker to suffer
his injuries at work after becoming trapped under
the machine.
Among the workplace injuries suffered were a broken
femur, broken collar bone, broken wrist, back
injuries and severe bruising to his back, feet and
legs.
The Health and
Safety Executive brought charges against his
employer, Pullman Design and Fabrication, who
pleaded guilty to breaching Section 2(1) of the
Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 which states
that: “It shall be the duty of every employer to
ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the
health, safety and welfare at work of all his
employees.”
At Cardiff Crown Court they were fined £30,000 and
ordered to pay costs of £27,500.
