Fatalities form work injuries 2008/09 provisional results

Work related injuries causing death show a decline on previous year averages   - 25th June 2009

Provisional figures for the 2008/09 year show a decrease in the number of fatalities caused through workplace injuries.

The number of workers who died in the 2008/09 year as a result of injuries at work was 180, which represent 0.6% per 100,000 workers.

Although this figure is not the final number due to things such as late reporting or long investigations into the cause of the workplace accident causing the death, it is still significantly lower than the previous year’s provisional figure of 229, which had four late incidents added to it.

The recognised measure of improvement is based on a five consecutive year average, which has the provisional figure 51 below the previous five year average of 231.

Working injury fatalities in Great Britain are consistently amongst the lowest in the European Union, with construction, agriculture and transport being amongst the worst industries across all EU states.
