Worker injured when skip truck overturned
A company was prosecuted for failing in their health and safety duties after a truck overturns - 30th March 2009
An employee was hurt in a driving
accident
at work when the small skip-loading dumper truck
he was driving overturned.
The man suffered his
injuries at work in Wootton on the 23rd November
2007, when he was required to drive the one ton
truck despite not having
received the correct training, and a risk
assessment not having been done.
His
workplace injuries happened as he was attempting
to negotiate a slippy incline in the truck, when it
overturned causing him to suffer injury to his left
knee and sprain ligaments.
His employers, builders A. Carpenter & Sons, were
prosecuted at Newport Magistrates Court where they
were fined £7,000 and ordered to pay £5,728.50 in
costs.
The Health and
Safety Executive (HSE) appealed to all employers
to ensure that their
employees are correctly trained on equipment they
are required to use, and that any equipment they
are required to use is the right equipment for the
job.
HSE Inspector Joanna Woodcock said: "In this
incident an untrained driver, a slippery slope and
an awkward route resulted in the dumper overturning.
It was a matter of luck that nobody was killed."
