Make a promise. Come Home Safe campaign launched by the HSE
January 2009 sees the launch of a campaign aimed at the farming community highlighting the high number of fatalities at work in the industry - 5th January 2009
January 2009 sees a campaign being launched hoping
to highlight the fact that farming is one of the
most dangerous occupations. It has above average
deaths for industry in general caused by
farming workplace accidents.
The campaign named "Make the promise. Come Home
Safe" is being run by
the Health and
Safety Executive (HSE) aimed at farming
families, from the grandparents through to the
children, using real life
working accidents to try
and highlight the dangers.
The HSE will be sending out around 70,000
information packs to British farmers during January
2009 containing all they need to "Make the promise.
Come Home Safe", also the pack will contain a form,
which can be sent back to receive further booklet,
"How lives are lost on British farms", alternatively
they can call 0800 141 2805 to request one by phone.
Accidents at work account for an average of around
45 fatalities each year in the farming industry.
This figure is high considering that agriculture
accounts for only 1.5% of the entire British
workforce, but it is responsible for between 15% and
20% of all fatalities in the same workforce.
Transportation, being hit by moving or falling
objects and falls from height account for over 55%
of farming accident fatalities over the last decade.
