Two killed in Madonna stage collapse
The roof of a stage being erected for a Madonna concert in Marseille collapsed killing two men - 17th July 2009
Two men have died from
injuries sustained at work after a section of
stage roof which was being erected for a Madonna
concert collapsed.
The mens tragic accident at
work happened at Marseille's Stade Velodrome as
they prepared the stage a concert that was due to
take place on Sunday.
A worker from France was killed immediately and a
Briton died later in the neurosurgery unit in La
Timone Hospital after a local French newspaper
reported that he had suffered his fatal injuries in
a 50ft fall from height.
Around fifty crew were working on the stage when the
incident happened, early reports suggest a column
that the roof was to be supported by gave way
causing the collapse, though other speculation
suggests one of the winches lifting the roof may
have been faulty.
Eight other people are thought to have suffered
serious
workplace injuries in the accident.
Madonna is
said to be devastated by the accident and the
concert has been cancelled.
