Industrial estate businesses targeted in health and safety inspections
Local authorities joining forces across both counties to check health and safety management on industrial estates - 8th July 2008
The local authorities
of Herts and Beds are joining forces with
the Health and
Safety Executive (HSE) to warn industrial
estates of possible inspections into
health and
safety.
The two authorities will join forces and carry out
inspections across both counties looking at general
site management and focusing on the four specific
areas of falls from height, workplace transport and
the responsibility for management of asbestos and Legionella.
The checks will begin from the 14th July with
initially a warning letter being sent to each
business on the industrial estates to be checked
detailing the main areas of concern.
Principal inspector with the HSE Mike Gibb said: “We
are targeting industrial estates as they can present
a dangerous environment in which to work with a
variety of health and safety risks particularly due
to traffic movement in and around the site. Workers
and members of the public may be put at risk because
of failures by site managers and business owners, to
properly consider
health and safety.
“Businesses on the estates should be made aware that
the local authority and the Health and Safety
Executive are undertaking these checks throughout
July and will be taking firm action where breaches
of legislation are found and where
safe working
practices are not being followed. Sites where
health
and safety is taken seriously have nothing to fear,
but we will root out those that put lives at risk.”
