The Health and Safety Executive
and the Health and Safety Commission have joined
forces retaining all previous responsibilities -
8th April 2008
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE)
and The Health and Safety Commission (HSC) have
merged into a solitary national regulatory body with
the responsibility of promoting and improving health
and safety at work. The new body will be called
the Health and
Safety Executive (HSE) and will still be
accountable to the public while providing more
clarity and transparency.
The merger of the two organisations was carried out
after extensive consultation with stakeholders using
the process laid out in the Legislative and
Regulatory Reform Act 2006.
It was felt that in the ever changing world, in
order to best meet the future challenges of
health
and safety at work, that a new organisation would
put in place a structure for further improvements in
British health and safety in the workplace.
There will be no change in requirements with regard
to health and safety at work or how it will be
enforced, with the basic content of the Health and
Safety at Work Act remaining. The new body will
maintain the statutory functions that the old bodies
were responsible for.
